Alabama Women’s Tennis Completes Day One of 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team tallied six singles wins and two doubles victories as part of the first day of competition in the 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships at the Alabama Tennis Stadium on Friday. The four-day event is set to run through Monday, and there are 18 different schools that are participating in the tournament.
To begin doubles play, the Tide's doubles pair of junior Smith Hinton and senior Danielle Spielmann topped Hannah Brett and Julia Kral of McNeese State in an 8-3 decision. Alabama's second doubles win came from senior Joanna Savva, as she teamed up Andrea Mastrippolito of Nicholls State to dominate Jacksonville State's Claudia Marsala and Malin Buechner, 8-4.
Hinton and Danielle are set to take on LSU's Ryann Foster and Skylar Holloway tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT as part of the second round of the A doubles main draw. Savva and Mastrippolito will face Elena Roca and Tjasa Jerse of Southern Miss at the same time in the second round of the B doubles main draw.
In singles play, Alabama's No. 18 nationally ranked singles player in senior Erin Routliffe took down Samford's Ellie Gerlach in the second round of the A singles main draw, 6-1, 6-3, after receiving a bye in the first round. The Tide's No. 33 ranked singles player in sophomore Andie Daniell topped Jazmin Britos of Louisiana Tech, 6-4, 6-2, in the second round after receiving a first round bye as well. Freshman Maddie Pothoff went on to defeat Polina Ivanova of Northwestern State, 6-3, 6-3, while Smith Hinton overcame Louisiana Lafayette's Elena Sava, 6-2, 6-4. Spielmann tallied back-to-back wins, as she outlasted Louisiana Tech's Nadja Manjon, 6-0, 7-6(1), before topping Anna Vrbenaka of Ole Miss in a 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Saturday's competition will start with two rounds of doubles at 9 a.m. CT with singles following not before Noon CT.
