TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –The Alabama soccer team featured three different goal scorers in the 3-1 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs on Thursday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to an overall 8-6-1 record including a 3-4-1 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
The offensive attack came early for both teams, as the Tide and the Bulldogs tallied goals in the first six minutes of regulation. At the 1:40 minute mark, junior Hailey Brohaugh took a corner kick which ended up bouncing back out to her as she entered the field of play, and then she drilled an artistic shot from 20 yards out to give the Tide a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded in the fifth minute, as Georgia's Caroline Waters converted a header off a free kick to equalize.
The score remained tied until the 35th minute, when junior Lacey Clarida found the back of the net on a penalty kick to give the Tide the lead back at 2-1. Clarida's goal ended up being the game-winner, and she is now tied for second on Alabama's single season game-winning goals list with four this season.
In the last 10 minutes of play in the first half, both teams were unable to convert and the Tide took a 2-1 lead going into intermission. Alabama tallied seven shots and two corner kicks in the half, while junior goal keeper Kat Stratton picked up one save between the posts.
The Tide's offensive rhythm continued immediately upon returning from halftime. Freshman Logue Shamburger converted from three yards out off a pass from sophomore Abbie Boswell at the 51:40 minute mark, and her goal resulted in the final score. The goal marks Shamburger's second of the year, and the assist marks Boswell's seventh this season. The Tide took six shots and two corner kicks in the half, while Stratton collected three saves.
Alabama compiled 13 shots, including seven shots on goal and four corner kicks in the 90 minute contest. Stratton ended up with four saves on the day, and her overall record improves to 8-6-1 including a 3-4-1 mark in league play.
With the win, Alabama is one win shy of breaking into the Tide's top-10 all-time single season wins list.
Next Thursday, Oct. 20, the Tide will battle the Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla., in a match that is set to start at 5:00 p.m. CT. Alabama will turn around three days later on Sunday, Oct. 23, to travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on LSU in a match that begins at 1:00 p.m. CT.
