Alabama Women’s Tennis Hosts 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's tennis will host the 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships at the Alabama Tennis Stadium, Student Recreation Courts and the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility this weekend. The four-day event is set to start on Friday and run through Monday. There are 18 different schools that are expected to compete in the tournament.
Doubles play begins on Friday at 9 a.m. CT, as there are nine scheduled matches in the first flight (A) and five matches in the second flight (B). Singles play is set to follow with 23 matches in the first flight (A) and 13 matches in the second flight (B).
Alabama's No. 34 doubles pair of senior Erin Routliffe and sophomore Andie Daniell received a bye in the first round of the A doubles draw and will take on the winner of the Arianne Hartono and Brooke Stevens (Ole Miss) vs. Anastasia Rentouli and Caroline Kelly (Mississippi State) match in the second round. Routliffe and Daniell enter the tournament as the No. 1 doubles seed.
The Tide has two more doubles pairs competing in the A doubles draw. Freshmen Juliana Valero and Maddie Pothoff are set to square off against Ellie Gerlach and Annika Hepp (Samford), while sophomore Smith Hinton and senior Danielle Spielmann will face Hannah Brett and Julia Kral (McNeese State). In the B doubles draw, senior Joanna Savva will team up with Nicholls State's Andrea Mastrippolito to take on Jacksonville State's Claudia Marsala and Malin Buechner.
In singles play, the Tide has seven student-athletes that are participating in the first round of the A singles draw. Alabama's No. 18 nationally ranked singles player Routliffe enters as the No. 3 seed, which earned her a first round bye. Routliffe will play the winner of the Nancy Karaky (Troy) vs. Ellie Gerlach (Samford) match in the second round.
The Tide's No. 33 nationally ranked singles player Daniell arrives in the A draw as the No. 5 seed and earned a first round bye as well. Daniell will take on the winner of the Jasmin Britos (Louisiana Tech) vs. Caroline Kelly (Mississippi State) match in the second round.
In the first round of the A draw, Pothoff will battle Polina Ivanova (Northwestern State), while Valero will face Stefana Andrei (Louisiana Monroe). Spielmann will compete against Nadja Manjon (Louisiana Tech), and Savva will challenge Hannah Brett (McNeese State). All four of these matches are slated to begin at 10:15 a.m. CT.
To conclude the first round of the main singles draw, Hinton will take on Elena Sava (Louisiana Lafayette) at approximately 11:30 a.m. CT.
There will be one round of consolations singles that will be played Friday in addition to the second round of the singles main draw. Results will be posted on RollTide.com at the end of each day.
