Track & Field Closes Out Day One of Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Alabama men's and women's track & field teams turned in a solid opening day at the Indiana Relays, hosted by Indiana University at the Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington, Ind.
Freshmen led the way for the Crimson Tide in five events, including Lawrence Wallace's season-best leap of 23-6 (7.16m) in the long jump and Stacey Destin's effort of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m) in the high jump. Will Herrscher finished second once again in the pole vault, Kord Ferguson threw his way to a runner-up finish in the shot put and Kristyn Williams was fourth in the 600 meters.
Junior Quanesha Burks (7.49) ran the fastest time in the 60 meters to move on to the finals on Saturday. Fellow junior Vanessa Clerveaux qualified for the final in both the 60 meters and the 60-meter hurdles. On the men's side, junior Angelo Goss advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles but suffered an injury while running in the prelims of the 60 meters.

Men's Event Summaries
Long Jump - Three Alabama jumpers all finished in the top five of the long jump, led by freshman Lawrence Wallace and his second place effort with a leap of 23-6 (7.16m), which was a season best. Senior Nathan Vardaman was just behind him in third thanks to a best mark of 23-2 1/3 (7.07m) while fellow senior Josh McCullan took fifth with a jump of 23-0 3/4 (7.03m).
Pole Vault - Freshman Will Herrscher turned in his second consecutive runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 16-1 1/4 (4.91m).
Shot Put - Redshirt freshman Kord Ferguson produced a season-best throw of 58-10 (17.93m) for a second-place finish in the shot put. Senior Hayden Reed took third with his best effort of 56-5 3/4 (17.21m).
60 Meters (Prelims) - The Tide qualified four runners for Saturday's final in the 60 meters. Senior Ahmed Ali (6.86) and freshman Xavian Marks (6.92) won their heat to qualify, while freshman Matthew Likely (6.86) and senior Tadashi Pinder (6.88) move through based on time. Senior Jeremiah Green ran a 6.92 to just miss out on qualifying, while freshman Minkah Fitzpatrick crossed the finish line in 7.01.
60-Meter Hurdles (Prelims) - Junior Angelo Goss ran the third-fastest time of the day in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a 7.81 to move on to Saturday's final.
200 Meters - Senior Ahmed Ali ran to a third-place finish in the 200 meters, recording a time of 21.73. Fellow senior Tadashi Pinder placed eighth, crossing the finish line in 22.04.
600 Meters - Junior Jacopo Lahbi led a trio of Tide runners in the 600 meters, finishing second thanks to a time of 1:19.00. Freshman Isaac Trevino (1:19.26) crossed the finish line just behind Lahbi in third. Senior Andrew Harris took fifth with a time of 1:20.24.
Women's Event Summaries
Long Jump - Sophomore Filippa Fotopoulou jumped to a runner-up finish in the long jump, recording a best mark of 20-2 1/4 (6.15m), which set a new personal best. Freshman Kiara Williams placed fourth with a jump of 19-8 1/4 (6.00m) and senior Lacey Dent was sixth with a leap of 19-2 (5.84m).
Shot Put - Sophomore Haley Teel took fourth in the shot put, recording a best toss of 49-7 3/4 (15.13m) on the day.
High Jump - Freshman Stacey Destin placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m), the best effort of her rookie season. Fellow freshman Claire Orcel jumped to a fourth-place finish with a mark of 5-5 (1.65m).
60 Meters (Prelims) - Alabama swept the top three spots in the 60 meters to qualify for Saturday's final. Junior Quanesha Burks recorded the top time, crossing the finish line in 7.49. Sophomore Olivia Fotopoulou and senior Vanessa Clerveaux tied for second in a time of 7.57. Freshman Janel Pate (7.73), junior Diamond Gause (7.74) and junior Brianna Sims (7.77) also competed for the Tide in the event.
60-Meter Hurdles (Prelims) - Vanessa Clerveaux turned in another solid performance in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.35 to qualify for Saturday's final.
200 Meters - Junior Diamond Gause led the Tide's contingent in the 200 meters, recording a time of 24.61 to place sixth. Sophomore Olivia Fotopoulou finished seventh in 24.71 and sophomore Domonique Williams was ninth in 24.80. Freshmam Katie Funcheon (24.87), freshman Janel Pate (24.94) and junior Brianna Sims (25.00) rounded out Alabama's runners in the event.
600 Meters - Freshman Kristyn Williams finished fourth in the 600 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 1:32.97. Sophomore Kaitlin Walker took 10th in 1:37.04.
