Alabama volleyball welcomes three newcomers to the team this season and we will be posting a Question & Answer segment for all three. Our second freshman is libero/defensive specialist Quincey Gary.
Quincey Gary comes to Alabama from Alexandria, Ind., as a three-time AAU All-American with the Munciana Volleyball Club. At Pendleton Heights High School, she was an All-County and All-Conference selection all four years and was twice named to the All-State team. She comes from a very athletic family, with multiple relatives playing collegiate basketball including her father Mark (UNC-Wilmington) and her uncles Jeff (Vanderbilt) and Greg (Tulane). Her brother, Brogan, currently plays basketball at the University of Saint Francis.
How did you get your start playing volleyball?
"I grew up in a very athletic family that lives, eats and breaths sports. I played a whole bunch of sports and then eventually fell in love with volleyball. The rest of my family played basketball and I did as well up until my freshman year. I decided to quit after I decided I wanted to play volleyball in college and I was also playing on a competitive club volleyball team. My dad played at UNC-Wilmington and my uncles played at Vanderbilt and Tulane. Growing up and hearing their stories, I always knew I wanted to play in college, even if it wasn't basketball."
When did that goal of playing in college become a real possibility?
"As I kept putting in the work, it became more of a reality. All of the top girls on my club team eventually went on to play in college so I wanted to be like them. I just kept putting in the work and it paid off."
When it came time to choose your school, what set Alabama apart?
"Alabama came into the picture my sophomore year. I loved all the coaches, the team, the school, facilities and the southern hospitality. When I narrowed down my choices, I looked at Kentucky and Alabama mostly. I just loved the atmosphere here and it felt like a dream come true."
Was there any hesitation to move all the way from Indiana to Alabama?
"I originally thought it would be a problem early on being homesick but everyone here is so welcoming and it's been fun so far. Everything has been awesome. School and workouts have been going well. It's definitely an adjustment but it's been fun."
What advice would you give to young volleyball players who want to play in college?
"If you care more and work more, then you'll always 'get' more. Always put in the extra time and get better at the little things. If you're committed to getting better every day then eventually it will pay off."
