Tide Cheer Takes Top Awards at Annual UCA College Camp

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama Cheer and Mascots had a memorable weekend at Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Spirit Camp in Tuscaloosa last week, with each squad earning top accolades at the prestigious camp. The camp is the largest in the country and Alabama has served as the host for over 20 years.
The All-Girl, Coed, and Big Al squads began their 2015-2016 season working hard with 11 practices over eight days, while they also took squad photos for the football program and had fun with various team bonding exercises.
Over 1,500 college cheerleaders from across the nation attended this year's UCA camp, as college teams from the SEC, Big 12, ACC, Sun Belt and Conference USA were all represented. Teams learned new stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, cheers and band cadences. The camp theme, "Game Day," focused on school traditions and emphasized improving crowd involvement.
On the final day, the teams competed against other squads in their divisions by performing a sideline, cheer, and band cadence in a college game day reenactment. Alabama's All-Girl squad placed first in the cheer and had top 5 finishes in the sideline, fight song, and overall game day competition. Coed won first place in the cheer, sideline, and fight song competition and were the overall game day champs. The Coed team also received the highly coveted "most collegiate team" award as voted unanimously by UCA staffers. In addition, Big Al had a great experience at camp. Big Al won the leadership award, which is voted on by the other mascots for the top program at the camp. Big Al also performed a skit with music and props that placed him second in the camp championship out of over 30 different mascot teams.Next up, the Alabama Cheerleaders will prepare to host a clinic on Aug. 22 that will help teach prospective student-athletes what they need to know in order to try out for Alabama.
