BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Alabama baseball's Kyle Overstreet was named to the 2015 SEC All-Defensive Team as a second baseman, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The award is the second conference award of his career, as he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2013.
As Alabama's primary second baseman, Overstreet excelled during the regular season at three infield positions and maintained the same reliable glove he has come to be known for. The junior committed just three errors, the team-low by an infielder, and ranked second on the team in assists at 133. He has also seen action at catcher and most recently at third base during the 2015 campaign.
Across his 179 career starts, Overstreet has collected 528 assists to rank fourth all-time and has committed only 13 errors for a .986 fielding percentage. As a freshman in 2013, he turned 67 double plays to rank second in Alabama history for twin-killings in a single season. Also during his first year, Overstreet collected 204 assists to tie for third all-time in assists for a season. In recognition of his efforts that season, the conference named him to the All-Freshman Team while the American Baseball Coaches Association honored him with the NCAA Division I Rawlings Gold Glove Award at second base.
The award marks the third time in Alabama history that a Crimson Tide player has been named to the conference's all-defensive team since the league began the recognition in 2008. Jake Smith won it as a third baseman in 2010, and was followed by teammate Taylor Dugas in 2011 as an outfielder.
LSU head coach Paul Mainieri was named SEC Coach of the Year while his Saturday starter, Alex Lange, was named league's Freshman of the Year. The conference's Pitcher of the Year went to Vanderbilt's Carson Fulmer while the Player of the Year was Andrew Benintendi of Arkansas. Mississippi State's Seth Heck earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year to round out the major conference awards.
