Women's Tennis Defeated by No. 10 Vanderbilt, 4-3

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The No. 9 Alabama women's tennis team was knocked off by the No. 10 Vanderbilt Commodores by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Alabama won the doubles point, and held an early 2-0 lead, but Vanderbilt rallied to secure the come-from-behind victory. With the loss, Alabama drops to 13-6 on the season, including an even 5-5 record against SEC foes. Vanderbilt (13-5, 8-1 SEC) has now won four straight matches, and nine of its last 10 overall.
Alabama had the momentum early, claiming the doubles point after victories on courts one and three. Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen bounced back after their first loss of the season on Friday, picking up an 8-5 victory on court one. Securing the point for the Tide was Luicelena Perez and Danielle Spielmann, who took an 8-4 decision on court three. Alabama's Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto were leading Vanderbilt's No. 18 Courtney Colton/Sydney Campbell 6-4 when the point was clinched.
The Crimson Tide extended its lead to 2-0, as Maya Jansen kicked off singles play with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win on court three. Following Jansen's victory the Commodores would begin to rally, claiming three consecutive singles wins to take a 3-2 lead.
With the match on the line, the Tide and Commodores would see both of the remaining singles matches head to a third and final set. Alabama's Luice Perez and Vanderbilt's Marie Casares exchanged 6-4 scores through their first two sets on court five, before Casares clinched the match for the Commodores with a 6-3 win in the final set.
Spielman and her opponent also battled through three sets on court two, with Spielman claiming a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 victory to give the Tide its third point.
Alabama will be back in action next Saturday when it squares off with intrastate rival, Auburn at 4:00 p.m. CT at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
