Women's Tennis Defeats LSU, 5-2

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Alabama women's tennis team defeated the LSU Tigers by a final score of 5-2 on Friday night in Baton Rouge to improve to 13-3 on the season, including a 5-2 record in SEC play. Alabama took an early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point, and fought through a competitive singles round to secure its fifth conference victory of the season.
Alabama quickly secured the first point in doubles play, its twelfth opening point in fourteen matches this year, as Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen defeated LSU's Joana Vale Costa and Noel Scott, 8-4 on court one. Routliffe and Jansen are now a perfect 14-0 on the season. Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto clinched the point with an 8-4 win of their own against Skylar Kuykendall and Abigail Owens on court two. Danielle Spielmann and Luicelena Perez were tied, 6-6, with Skylar Holloway and Amanda Atanasson when Alabama clinched.
The Tide faced a challenge in singles, going to a third set in three of six singles matches. LSU's Vale Costa evened the score at 1-1, knocking off Routliffe 6-3, 6-4 on court one. Perez broke the tie for the Tide, defeating Holloway 7-5, 6-3 on court two after starting the first set down 4-1. Jansen extended the lead to 3-1 for the Tide after defeating Owens in three sets on court three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Tigers refused to back down and moments later Kuykendall defeated Spielmann on court two, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to cut Alabama's lead to 3-2. Clinching for the Tide was Emily Zabor who won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in three sets on court five to secure the match.
Alabama will continue conference play on Sunday against Texas A&M in College Station. First serve between the Tide and Aggies is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
