Women's Tennis Climbs to Sixth in ITA National Rankings

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association today announced updated team, singles and doubles rankings for the 2015 regular season. Alabama climbed three spots from ninth to sixth after defeating No. 6 Georgia and Tennessee over the weekend. The Crimson Tide also has three of six singles players and its No. 1 doubles team nationally ranked.
Alabama continued SEC play over the weekend, knocking off No. 6 Georgia on Friday before taking down the Tennessee Volunteers on Sunday. On Friday, the Tide jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, and denied a late comeback attempt by the Bulldogs to lock down a 5-2 victory. Alabama notched its sixth shutout win of the season on Sunday, blanking the Volunteers by a final score of 4-0.
The UCLA Bruins were the week's biggest movers in the national rankings, climbing ten spots from No. 12 to No. 2 after posting wins vs. No. 3 USC and No. 4 Baylor. The Bruins were also the last team to beat current No.1 North Carolina - who moved to 15-0 with a pair of shutout wins on Saturday - taking down the Tar Heels back in the 2014 NCAA Team Championship. Florida, USC and Virginia rounds out the Top 5.
Alabama returns to the sixth slot in the rankings for the second time this season, marking the highest position the Crimson Tide has reached during the 2015 season.
Alabama continues to have the top half of its singles lineup ranked nationally by the ITA, including sophomore Erin Routliffe (26), and junior Maya Jansen (48) who both appear in the Top 50. Sophomore Danielle Spielmann rounds out the Crimson Tide singles players in the national rankings at No. 54.
After clinching the doubles point in Friday's match vs. Georgia, defending NCAA champions Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen are currently slotted at No. 9 in the National Doubles Rankings. Routliffe and Jansen are a perfect 11-0 in doubles play thus far in the 2015 regular season.
The 2015 ITA Division I National Rankings continue next Tuesday, March 17, with a new set of men's and women's team rankings. The next ITA Division I National Singles and Doubles Rankings for the men and women will next be released on Tuesday, March 24.
