COLUMBIA, S.C. - In a match that lasted nearly six hours, the Alabama women's tennis team rallied back from a 1-0 deficit, and knocked off the South Carolina Gamecocks 4-2 on Sunday afternoon inside the USC Field House in Columbia, S.C. Despite dropping the doubles point for just the second time this season, the Crimson Tide was able to secure the victory after taking four consecutive singles matches to improve its record to 9-2 on the season.
Alabama appeared to have the momentum early, as No.9 Erin Routliffe/Maya Jansen secured a quick 8-2 victory to kick off doubles. Routliffe and Jansen are now a perfect 10-0 to begin the season. South Carolina quickly answered, knocking off Luicelena Perez/Danielle Spielmann 8-5 on court three. The Gamecocks would take the point when they earned a come-from-behind 8-5 victory over Natalia Maynetto/Emily Zabor on court two.
The match would carry on for over three and a half hours before a second point hit the scoreboard, as courts one, two and three all went to three sets in singles play. Zabor evened the score for the Tide after rallying back from a 5-2 first set deficit to earn a 7-6, 6-1 win. Spielmann earned the Tide's second point, etching a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 victory on court two, ahead of Routliffe's come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win on court one.
With Alabama ahead 3-1, South Carolina would begin to rally. On court three, Brigit Folland handed Alabama's Maya Jansen her first singles loss of the season, topping No. 56 Jansen by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Jansen entered today's match a perfect 6-0 in No.3 singles to begin the season.
Clinching the match for the Tide was Natalia Maynetto who earned the only victory in straight sets on the day. Maynetto knocked off South Carolina's Megen Cochran 6-1, 7-5 on court six.
The Tide will return to Tuscaloosa for the first time since its match vs. TCU on January 31, when it will square off with No. 2 Georgia on Friday, March 6. First serve between the conference foes is set for 5:00 p.m. CT.
