Deacon Medders
RHP
6-3, 191
Tuscaloosa, Ala. (American Christian Academy)
A local product, Deacon Medders signs with the Crimson Tide coming from American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa. A versatile player, Medders was recognized as an all-state center fielder in 2014, and followed that with another all-state selection in 2015, this time at shortstop. He has been named to the Tuscaloosa News Super 9 in each of the last two seasons, while also receiving the privilege to compete in the annual North-South All-Star Game. In addition to baseball, Medders has competed in football, where he earned an all-state selection as a punter in 2014. He has also taken part in indoor track during his time at ACA. Medders has a pair of cousins whom competed for the Crimson Tide in football in Chester Lewis, a long snapper, and Daniel Geddes, a wide receiver.
Head Coach Mitch Gaspard on Medders:
"He's a guy that can really fill up the strikezone. He has a good arm with a really good breaking ball. He's mentally tough. He's been around the program for a while being local here, and we think he has a really good chance to be a two-way player for us. We certainly like where his game can go during his time at Alabama."
Coach Andy Phillips on Medders:
"Deacon is a very athletic kid. He is a right-handed pitcher who also swings the bat. He has a really good arm and a really good breaking ball. I think he's a kid that can be a very good arm for us, certainly right away."
Sonny Potter
LHP
6-2, 210
Vestavia Hills, Ala. (Vestavia Hills)
Sonny Potter joins the Alabama baseball team from Vestavia Hills High School, in Vestavia Hills, Ala. The 6-2 lefty has received numerous accolades during his junior season at VHS, including being named to the Super All-State Team, the ASWA Baseball All-State Team, the Birmingham All-Metro Team, and the All Over the Mountain Team. He was also selected to the annual North-South All Star Baseball Game following the 2015 season. Potter has been selected as the Perfect Game USA All-American Honorable Mention for two years in a row. In addition to baseball, Potters also competed in football his freshman and sophomore year. His grandfather, Jimmy Sidle, was an All-American quarterback at Auburn.
Head Coach Mitch Gaspard on Potter:
"Sonny has been a high-level high school pitcher at Vestavia Hills. He's a left-hander that has three pitches with really good command. He's been their No. 1 starter at a really good high school. We think he can come in and toss innings early and often for us."
Coach Andy Phillips on Potter:
"Sonny is a left-handed pitcher and a great competitor. He has tremendous pitchability. I love his makeup. He was a pretty good football player, so he comes with a lot of intensity, and he is certainly another great left-handed arm to add to this class."
