TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team fell to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 2-1, in the Crimson Tide's final home match of the 2015 season. The Tide will play in one more game before closing out its 2015 season, the first under head coach Wes Hart.
Alabama outshot Mississippi State with a season-high 30 shots compared to MSU's 11, but was unable to come away with the victory. The Bulldogs would strike first, but the Crimson Tide bounced back to even things up before State would score the eventual game winner with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. Going on the attack in the final 10 minutes, Alabama put together five shot attempts off two corners and six shot attempts overall but could not score the equalizer.
"I'm extremely proud of our girls for this game," said Alabama head coach Wes Hart. "This was probably our best game in probably a month or so. I felt like the offense was clicking. We created 30 chances and 11 corner kicks, so clearly we were doing something right, unfortunately we weren't rewarded for it."
The two teams spent much of the first half switching possession, but the Tide was able to break through the Bulldog defense on a few occasions for some scoring opportunities. Alabama outshot Mississippi State by an 11-4 margin, but could not find the back of the net. The Crimson Tide attack challenged State goalkeeper Tanya de Souza, putting three on goal, compared to zero on target by the Bulldogs in the first half of play.
Mallory Eubanks broke the tie following intermission, recording her third goal of the season at the 55-minute mark. Alabama would not sit by idly, returning the score to even as Hailey Brohaugh notched her first goal of the season just over a minute later, rebounding the Emma Welch penalty kick to move the score to 1-1.
The two teams battled for 20 minutes until Kennadi Carbin provided Mississippi State with the eventual game winner. The freshman put the Bulldogs in front with her fourth score of the season, using a through ball from Eubanks and Ariana Holmes to give MSU the 2-1 lead. Alabama continued to push for the equalizer but could not score before time ran out.
At the 50-minute mark of the game, Abby Lutzenkirchen officially became the all-time leader for minutes played in Alabama soccer history. The senior passed Ashley Willis' mark of 6,592 for the most minutes played which Willis put together from 2009-12. Lutzenkirchen has started every game of her career across four seasons in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama will wrap up its 2015 season with a road matchup in Fayetteville against Arkansas on Thursday, Oct. 29. The Crimson Tide and Razorbacks are scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kick on SEC Network+.
