Alabama Rowing Wins Four, Medals 11 at Chattanooga Head Race

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Alabama had a successful opening outing to its fall season at the Chattanooga Head Race on Saturday, winning four events and medaling a total of 11 boats.
"I think we had a really solid team performance," Head Coach Larry Davis said. "We had great performances from everybody. We were up against great competition and I think we handled that and the course well. Even though we got a little soggy with the weather, everyone handled their business. Whenever you have that kind of adversity and just go out and handle your business, you have the kind of performance like we did today. We have freshmen throughout all of our boats and they really stepped up their game and are helping us perform well. The freshmen along with everybody else are contributing to help us perform well."
Alabama's first win of the day came in the Women's Collegiate 8+, where the Tide swept the top five spots in the event. The leading boat crossed the line in 16:11.24 with the remaining four coming in under the 7:10.00 mark. The next fastest boat in the field wouldn't cross until 17:30.02.
The Tide's next win came in the Women's Championship Doubles, claiming four of the top five spots in the event. The winning lineup of Jennifer Parker and Abby Marks won in 18:08.34 while the next Tide team of Dani Mazer and Katie Scott finished in third place just under the 19-minute mark at 18:59.93.
Alabama's 4 boats found success as well, as the Tide won both the Novice 4+ (18:10.55) and the Collegiate 4+ (18:13.37). Alabama placed four boats in the top eight in the Collegiate 4+, also medaling with a second-place boat in 18:17.45.
The Tide medaled two boats in the Collegiate Pairs, placing second (18:44.07) and third (18:59.44) and added another in the Novice 8+, placing second in 18:15.21 as one of just two boats in the race to finish in under 19 minutes.
Alabama continues its fall season next weekend in Cambridge, Mass., at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 17.
