Alabama Volleyball welcomes eight newcomers to the team this season, so we'll be chatting with all of them over the next few days. Our fifth newcomer is Natalie Murison from Woodridge, Ill.
How did you get your start playing volleyball?
"I started around third grade. My older sister and I played together all the time growing up so I was very interested in the sport and decided that I wanted to continue playing."
Did you play any other sports growing up?
"I played a little soccer and basketball but volleyball was the one that really stuck with me. When I got to junior high, I definitely knew I wanted to continue playing volleyball. My club team was pretty competitive and they only allowed us to play one sport, so that's when I chose volleyball."
When did playing collegiately become a goal of yours?
"When my sister committed to Seton Hall, it was very inspiring to me because she's my role model. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and play college as well. It became a real possibility around my freshman year of high school. I had really good experiences with my high school and club teams. It was my goal to play in college and I was willing to do anything to achieve it."
What are some of the other schools you were looking at?
"I visited Auburn and Dayton as well as Alabama. The other two schools were great but once I came to Alabama, I knew that it was the right choice for me. The teammates and coaches were so welcoming to me and it felt like home."
Being from the Chicago area, were you concerned about being far from home?
"At first, I was a little worried about it. I visited Dayton, which was a little closer to home, but once I came to Alabama it felt like home and distance didn't really matter anymore."
What are some of the team goals this season?
"As a team, we definitely want to win the SEC and advance as far as we can in the NCAA Tournament. Our freshmen class has really bought into that and we are all willing to do whatever we need to do to make that happen. We're willing to work as hard as we can to help everyone out and achieve our goals."
Do you have any individual goals on the court this season?
"I always just want to give my best effort and not be selfish. I want to play for the team and do what I have to do to help the rest of my teammates."
How has the transition to college life been so far?
"So far it's been pretty good. I'm really just getting into the groove of things since classes just started. Everyone here has been so helpful. All my teammates, coaches and advisors have been here for me to answer all my questions."
What is your biggest tip to any young aspiring volleyball players?
"Just keep working hard and never give up. Set your goals high and don't stop until you get to where you want to be."
