TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama's top-seeded football team in the upcoming College Football Playoff Semifinal in the Sugar Bowl is one of the nation's top academic programs as well.
The Crimson Tide rank third in the annual academic rankings of the top 25 college football teams, produced by New America, a Washington D.C. think-tank. Alabama also leads the nation with seven players having already earned their master's degrees while tying for the national lead in number of graduates on the roster this bowl season.
TCU, who was sixth in the final College Football Playoff rankings, leads the New America academic rankings, followed by No. 14 UCLA in second. No. 17 Clemson follows Alabama in fourth while No. 15 Arizona State rounds out the top five. No. 4 Ohio State, the Tide's opponent in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, ranks fifth in the New America academic rankings.
Alabama also practiced for two hours Friday in full pads inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility. It was the fourth of seven bowl practices before Christmas and 13 prior to the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans in the first College Football Playoff. The game against No. 4 Ohio State will be broadcast on ESPN with Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe calling the action.
