TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Last week, Alabama baseball inked 11 recruits to add to the 2015-16 roster. Over the next three days all 11 players from this year's recruiting class will be featured on RollTide.com. Gene Wood
Infielder
6-1, 175
Flowood, Miss. (Jackson Preparatory)
Gene Wood comes to Alabama from neighboring Mississippi where he is ranked as the seventh-best player in the state according to Perfect Game USA. The starting second baseman at Jackson Preparatory, Wood helped lead the Patriots to consecutive state championships in 2013 and 2014. On his way to being named team MVP his junior season, Wood set school records for batting average and runs, owning a .606 average and accumulating 68 runs. His 68 runs also led the nation for prep players and helped earn him 2014 All-Metro and MAIS All-State honors. Wood is a standout athlete in basketball and football as well, earning offensive MVP honors on the gridiron during his junior year. Wood's father, Greg played quarterback at Baylor, as did his grandfather, Cotton Davidson, who went on to play in the National Football League following his collegiate career.
Coach Andy Phillips on Wood:
"Gene Wood is a left-handed hitting infielder. He's a standout from Flowood, near Jackson, Mississippi. He has some great actions defensively and can help us there. He also has some pop in his bat. We're really excited about him and his potential as both a fielder and hitter. He has some room, physically, to grow and we like that. He does some good things right now so we're really excited about him."
Coach Dax Norris on Wood:
"This kid, Gene Wood, he really rakes when he's in the box. He can swing the bat and it shows in his statistics. He also has great mobility in the field and we like that. He's going to be able to help us in many different areas.
Alex Webb
Catcher
6-0, 200
Columbia, Tenn. (Columbia Central HS)
Perfect Game USA's top-ranked catcher from the state of Tennessee, Alex Webb joins the Crimson Tide thanks to a standout career at Columbia Central High School in Columbia, Tenn. Webb was named to the site's 2014 Underclass Second Team and was named Underclass Honorable Mention the year prior. His efforts during his junior season earned him all-state honors, and he also earned All-District 8-AAA honors during his sophomore and junior seasons.
Coach Dax Norris on Webb:
"Alex Webb is another Tennessee catcher that we signed, and we are glad to have him. He can catch really well, and he swings the bat left-handed. He can play first and third base so there's some versatility there. He's got some great instincts behind the plate and can catch and throw well. He also comes to Alabama with a very advanced swing that we can build on."
