TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Kaylin Burchell has made the most of her time at Alabama. The former age group national record holder in the 50 breaststroke went from NCAA qualifier as a freshman and sophomore to All-American last season. She has also gone from being ranked in the top-150 in the world during the summer of 2013 to being ranked in the top-30 in the world this past summer. That jump in the world rankings has done more than get her noticed, it also earned the Richmond, Ky., native a place on the United States National Team.
Burchell is the first active Crimson Tide swimmer since the 1990s to earn a place on Team USA. She went into the summer after medaling in the 100 breaststroke at the SEC Championship and setting a new school record with a 59.17 in finals - bettering the mark set by Olympic bronze medalist Anne Poleska. She also earned a top-eight finish at the NCAA Championships in the 100 breaststroke, taking home first team All-America honors in the process.
At the 2014 USA Long Course Meters Championships, Buchell posted the seventh fastest time in the prelims of the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:01.65. It was the 200m breaststroke where she grabbed a spot on the US National Team, posting a 2:26.22 in prelims, the third fastest time of the afternoon.
