TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama sophomore midfielder Merel Van Dongen scored two goals, including the game winner on a penalty kick in overtime, to lead the Crimson Tide to a 2-1 win over Georgia State on Friday night.
It marked the Tide's (1-1) first victory over the season, while Georgia State falls to 0-1-1.
Alabama dominated the contest, outshooting the Panthers, 22-6, on the night. Van Dongen and Molly Atherton led the Tide with four shots apiece.
Freshman Mia Jahr and junior Pia Rijsdijk assisted Van Dongen's first goal, which came in the 65th minute of play. However, Georgia State responded just over five minutes later, at the 70:03 mark, to even things up.
The score stayed that way until Atherton was dragged down in the penalty area at the 93:13 mark to set up Van Dongen's heroics.
The Tide will return to action on Sunday, when it hosts Mercer. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Alabama Sports Complex. Following the game, the movie "Finding Nemo" will be played on the stadium's video board.
