WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Alabama soccer team dropped its season-opening contest, falling by a final score of 3-0 at No. 15 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.
All three Wake Forest goals were scored in the opening 45 minutes of play, with all three coming on breakaways. All-American senior forward Katie Stengel finished with a pair of goals, which came in the 19th and 44th minutes of play. Ally Berry scored the other goal for Wake in the 34th minute.
The Crimson Tide had a great opportunity to take an early lead in the 10th minute when senior Molly Atherton ripped a shot from 22 yards out, but it ricocheted off the cross bar and was cleared away.
Alabama regrouped after intermission and outshot Wake Forest, 6-5, over the final 45 minutes, but failed to find the back of the net.
UA goalkeeper Shelby Church finished with three saves in the contest.
The Tide will play a pair of home matches next weekend, when it welcomes Georgia State on Friday and Mercer on Sunday. Both contests begin at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Sports Complex.
