Rowing Wraps Up Day One at Knecht Cup

CHERRY HILL, N.J.- The Alabama rowing team opened competition at the Knecht Cup Regatta with two crews advancing to the finals on Sunday. The Crimson Tide competed in a total of seven races Saturday, on the Cooper River.
"Overall everyone did better and improved from last week," Alabama head coach Larry Davissaid. "We have a lot of youth that have not been to a regatta like this. It is definitely a positive the growth we gained as a team."
The Alabama second varsity 8+ placed fourth in the first semifinal to advance to the petite final competition on Sunday with a 7:03.84. It used a second place finish in its heat to start the day with a time of 7:10.34.
The novice 8+ will advance to the grand finals on Sunday by finishing second in its semifinal heat with a 7:14.46. The crew opened the day with a second place finish in its qualifying heat with a 7:12.35.
"We certainly have things we need to get better at but overall everyone got better this week," Davis said. "We want to be able to handle ourselves in these conditions. It is a chaotic, big regatta but a great opportunity that will pay dividends when we get to conference championships."
Alabama opened the day with its varsity 4+ boat finishing fifth with an 8:25.36. The second varsity 4+ also crossed the line in fifth with an 8:17.96. The first varsity 8+ crew finished fourth in its heat with a 6:58.28, just missing a bid to the semifinal round.
The Tide will open competition on Sunday with the novice 8+ final at 11:10 a.m.
