TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - National watch list recognition continued to roll in for Alabama football players this week as the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Lombardi Award and the Doak Walker Award released their preseason lists.
Quarterback AJ McCarron and returning Outland Trophy winner Barrett Jones were named as "players to watch" for the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 2012 Player of the Year Award.
McCarron threw for 2,634 yards with 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions in 2011 while leading Alabama to the school's 14th National Championship. He was BCS National Championship Game Offensive MVP in a 21-0 win over LSU. Jones was a unanimous first-team All-American at left tackle in 2011. He is expected make the move to center as a senior in 2012.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum also tabbed junior Eddie Lacy as a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. Trent Richardson captured the award last season when Lacy accounted for 674 yards, 7.1 yards per carry and seven touchdowns as his backup.
The 43rd annual Rotary Lombardi Award watch list identified six Alabama players on its 2012 watch list, including three on offense and three on defense. Jones, Chance Warmack and D.J. Fluker made the list along the offensive line while linebacker Nico Johnson, linebacker C.J. Mosley and defensive lineman Jesse Williams were recognized on defense.
Cornelius Bennett is the only Crimson Tide player to win the Lombardi Award, but UA has had nine other finalists, including Dont'a Hightower and Courtney Upshaw in 2011.
