SKILLMAN, N.J. - Sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane has earned All-America honors in singles, which was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Thursday. She becomes the third member of the Crimson Tide women's tennis team to be recognized on the All-America team in singles and first since Robin Stephenson did so in 2005.
"Mary Anne is truly deserving of achieving All-America status," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "She is the epitome of the consummate student-athlete as she was also recently decorated with Elite 89 honors at the NCAA Championships. She is committed to excellence and transcends greatness in the academic arena and on the tennis court."
Macfarlane has been a steady force for Alabama since arriving at the Capstone last season where she quickly jumped into the No. 1 singles position as a freshman. The Ogden, Utah, native built upon the success she had throughout her rookie campaign to have an even stronger season for the Tide as a sophomore. In 2012, Macfarlane led the team in overall singles victories with 34, while adding another 29 wins in doubles. She became just the fifth player at Alabama to amass 30-plus singles wins in a season and also broke the record for most wins by a player competing at the No. 1 position. In 2012, Macfarlane clinched three overall wins for the Tide and beat seven nationally-ranked opponents. For the second-straight season, she earned the right to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships as well as the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
"I am so grateful for this honor," said Macfarlane. "I am blessed to have parents, coaches and teammates that have helped me reach this goal. I am so excited for the coming year to continue to help our team reach new goals."
Macfarlane is a two-time All-SEC First Team selection, the winner of the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year Award and the 2011 ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year. She finishes the 2012 season ranked 15th, which is the second-highest final mark in program history and highest for a sophomore.
