NEWCASTLE, County Down, England - Alabama freshman Justin Thomas halved his match with Europe's Sebastian Cappelen on Friday in the third round of Palmer Cup play at The Royal County Down Golf Club.
Thomas, from Goshen, Ky., has now earned 2.5 points for the Americans, who hold a 10-6 lead heading into Saturday's final round of singles matches. The USA team won two matches on Friday and halved three others. The United States will need two points on Saturday to retain the Palmer Cup.
Thomas earned a half on Friday with a birdie on the 18th hole. Cappelen, of Denmark, had taken his first lead of the day after winning the 15th hole. The 16th and 17th holes were then halved to give Cappelen a 1-up lead heading to the 18th.
Thomas opened the match with back-to-back birdies to take an early lead. However, Thomas would concede the next two holes to fall back to even. Thomas had a 1-up lead after the seventh, ninth and 12th holes but each time Cappelen responded by taking the next hole.
Thomas will take on Europe's Daan Huizing in the second singles match of the day, which gets underway at 10 a.m. local time.
