NAMPA, Idaho -
University of Alabama junior Krystle Schade finished second in the women's high jump on the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday evening in Nampa, Idaho.
The reigning Southeastern Conference champion and South Region Athlete of the Year cleared 6-0.5 to earn her third straight indoor All-America honor with her highest finish to date at the NCAA Championships.
Schade cleared on her first attempt at the first four heights she attempted but couldn't clear the next height at 6-1.5. Arizona's Brigetta Barrett, the top jumper in the NCAA ranks heading into the meet, won the competition with a jump of 6-5, one inch shy of the NCAA record.
Schade came into the meet having taken top honors in her previous five meets this season. However, the second-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships is the highest by a UA women's high jumper since Disa Gisladottir won the event in 1983.
For the men's team, Kamal Fuller finished 14th in the long jump with a leap of 23-1.25. New Mexico's Kendall Spencer won the event with a mark of 26-3.5.
The Championships continue Saturday with UA's Kaylon Eppinger representing the Crimson Tide in the women's pentathlon. She enters the competition with the seventh highest score in the nation this season at 4,081 points.
