FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Alabama soccer team closed out its four-match road trip with a 3-1 loss against Arkansas, Sunday afternoon at Razorback Field. After the weekend the Crimson Tide moves to 7-5-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Southeastern Conference play.
Arkansas (6-7-1, 3-4-1 SEC) scored two first half goals before Alabama was able to get on the scoreboard. Freshman Merel Van Dongen buried a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to pull the Tide within one. The goal was the second on the season for the rookie.
The Razorbacks would put the game away in the 86th minute with a third goal to hand the Tide its first weekend without at least a point to add to the standings this season.
The two teams fired off 13 shots each with Alabama recording nine of those in the second half. Van Dongen led all players with four shots, putting two on frame.
Alabama will return to the friendly confines of the Alabama Soccer Stadium for four SEC matches, starting next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 12, Alabama welcomes Mississippi State, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 14, UA will go head-to-head against SEC newcomer Missouri, with play starting at 1 p.m.
