CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 23rd-ranked women's tennis team had an impressive finish at the UVA Invitational on Monday, sweeping all seven singles matches against Utah while not dropping a set. Junior Alexa Guarachi won all three of her singles matches throughout the course of the tournament en route to being named singles champion. In addition, Guarachi and senior Courtney McLane were awarded the doubles crown with their pair of victories.
"I was very impressed with the way we competed today," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We played with a lot of intensity. We did a great job of getting in there early and setting the tone for the match. This was arguably the best we have competed all weekend."
No. 43 Guarachi earned a hard-fought win against Ute senior Anastasia Putilina, who is ranked 90th, 7-5, 7-6, while sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane, the No. 13 singles player in the nation, topped sophomore Sarah Pham, 6-4, 6-0. No. 104 McLane battled through a close first set to win 7-6, 6-3 over sophomore Callie Craig. Senior Taylor Lindsey and junior Antonia Foehse won by similar scores as Lindsey topped freshman Natasha Smith 6-2, 6-3, while Foehse posted a 6-3, 6-3 decision over freshman Danielle Flores. Freshman Emily Zabor collected a 6-4, 6-4 victory against sophomore Lucia Kovarikova, and sophomore Alex Clay cemented the sweep with a 6-3, 7-5 win over freshman Sammie Watson.
"Alexa got a big win today," added Mainz. "I think it was a great team win overall and a great step forward for the program. We gained a lot of momentum at this tournament that we will need heading into our dual match season."
Next up, Alabama heads to Nashville, Tenn. for the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend where it will take on No. 21 Texas on Saturday, January 28.
