TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team returns to Tuscaloosa this weekend for a lone match against UAB. Kickoff is set for Friday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Crimson Tide return home with a 3-2-1 record, while the Blazers enter Friday's match 2-3-0. After Friday's game, the Tide will not play until a Sept. 18, home game against Morehead State.
LAST TIME OUT
The Tide had its first road trip of the young season, and split a pair of games against tough opposition in the University of San Diego and San Diego State. On Friday, Alabama fell to San Diego, 2-0. However, UA rebounded quickly, scoring an early first half goal to put away No. 22 San Diego State, 1-0, on Sunday.
WHO TO WATCH
Alabama sophomore Kendall Khanna scored her second goal of the season and it came in a big way as the tally handed the Tide a 1-0 win over the Aztecs on Sunday. Khanna enters the weekend second on the team with six points. Her two goals also rank second on the team, while her two assists are tied with junior Lindsey Sillers for first on the squad.
SCOUTING UAB
The Blazers enter the weekend 2-3-0 after splitting a pair of games this past weekend. On Friday, UAB traveled to Belmont and came away with a 3-2 victory. On Sunday afternoon they welcomed No. 7 Florida State to Birmingham and lost 4-0. The Blazers are led by senior defender Pascale Pinard, who leads the team with two goals and four points on the season. UAB finished the 2010 season with an 8-9-2 record overall and 4-5-2 record in Conference USA. The Blazers return 12 letter-winners from last season, including four starters. In goal, the Blazers have two players splitting time in CJ Winship and Katie Getzinger. UAB is led on the bench by Harold Warren, who is in his first year as head coach after spending the previous four years as an assistant at Southern Cal.
SERIES HISTORY
The two teams will be meeting for the 12th time, with the Blazers leading the series 7-3-1. Alabama won last year, 1-0 in Birmingham. Brooke Rogers scored in the seventh minute of that contest while Justine Bernier tallied three saves to earn her first shutout of the 2010 season. The Tide is only 2-3-1 at home against the Blazers, with its last meeting in Tuscaloosa being a 2-0 win for UAB in 2009.
RANKED WIN
With the 1-0 win over No. 22 ranked San Diego State on Sunday, the Alabama soccer team earned its first win over a ranked opponent since 1999. The last time the Tide defeated a ranked opponent was in the opening match of the 1999 season, when the Tide downed No. 19 Vanderbilt, 2-1, in overtime on Aug. 27 in Tuscaloosa. Head coach Todd Bramble earned 16 wins against ranked opponents while at Clemson, before earning his first at the helm of the Crimson Tide program this past weekend.
RECORD WATCH
Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier has already etched her name in the record books in numerous categories and is looking for more in her final season at the Capstone. Bernier earned her 23rd career victory in goal, moving her into sole possession of second place in the career annals. Tide great Amy Pseja holds the record with 30 career wins. Bernier has extended her career records in saves (370) and shutouts (16).
NON-CONFERENCE WINS
Alabama has enjoyed success in non-conference matches under head coach Todd Bramble. In the midst of year four under Bramble, the Tide sports a 17-9-2 non-conference record. In the three completed seasons, Alabama has twice earned five wins, while earning four in 2009. The Tide already sports three wins in 2011 with two more to play.
2011: 3-2-1
2010: 5-2
2009: 4-3
2008: 5-2-1
