
Volleyball Drops Match To Auburn in Three

AUBURN, Ala. - The Alabama women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (22-25, 13-25, 23-25) Southeastern Conference loss to the Auburn Tigers on Friday night from the Student Activities Center. With the loss, Alabama falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in SEC play. Auburn improves to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
For the 12th time in 13 matches this season, Kayla Fitterer paced the Tide in kills. The junior outside hitter posted a match-high 14 kills on 33 attempts. Sophomore setter Andrea McQuaid posted a .778 hitting percentage, posting seven kills on nine attempts with no errors. McQuaid also had team-highs of 17 assists and eight digs.
This was the first time during the 2011 season that the Crimson Tide failed to win a set in a match.
Three players reached double digits in kills for Auburn, as the Tigers extended their win streak over the Tide to four matches. Kelly Fidero led the way with 14 kills, while Vesela Zapryanova added 11 kills and Sarah Bullock had 10. Bullock added a match-high 13 digs and Chelsea Wintzinger had a match-high 35 assists for the Tigers.
After trailing 19-21 in the first set, Alabama scored three straight points to take a 22-21 advantage following a kill by Fitterer. After falling behind, Auburn scored the four straight points to take the opening set.
Auburn took control of the match, winning the second set 25-13 to take a 2-0 lead. In the third set, Auburn jumped out to an 8-4 lead and had a 12-8 advantage, before the Tide responded to even the set at 18-18 following a kill by Fitterer. The Tide lead 21-19 after scoring back-to-back points, but the Tigers recovered to score six of the final eight points in the set to earn the straight sets victory.
Alabama remains on the road this weekend with a Sunday afternoon match at Georgia. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT from the Ramsey Center.
