TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team will look to rebound after a tough loss to No. 25 Memphis when it hosts New Mexico on Sunday, Aug. 28 at Noon. Both squads are coming off of 1-0 losses to ranked opponents as the Lobos fell at No. 9 Florida State, Friday night.
LAST TIME OUT
Alabama suffered its first loss of the season when Memphis sneaked past the Crimson Tide, 1-0, Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Tigers scored in the 65th minute for the only tally of the match. Memphis out-shot Alabama 14-11 while senior keeper Justine Bernier recorded six saves.
WHO TO WATCH
Junior forward Lindsey Sillers has stepped into her role atop the Crimson Tide attack. After the departure of Brooke Rogers, Sillers has filled in nicely, logging over 50 minutes in each of the three matches. Over that span, the Birmingham native has tallied four points on a goal and two assists. Sillers scored in the opening match of the season against Kennesaw State and then assisted on both goals in the win at Samford.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO
The Lobos enter Sunday 1-1-1 after opening the season against Saint Mary's with a 1-1 tie and then downing CSU-Bakersfield, 4-0, before opening this weekend with a 1-0 loss at No. 9 Florida State. Jennifer Williams leads the team in scoring after the first three matches with four points on two goals. Rachel Montoya closely follows with three points on a goal and an assist. Jael Fanning has handed out three assists already on the young season. In goal, Kelli Cornell has played every minute, allowing two goals in 290 minutes of action for a 0.62 goals against average. She has made seven saves and tallied a shutout. Last season, New Mexico made its first ever NCAA tournament appearance, falling to Notre Dame in the opening round. The Lobos fell to BYU in the Mountain West title game. Overall UNM finished 12-3-5 in 2010 and 5-0-2 in MWC play. Kit Vela enters her 10th year as the head coach.
