TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team dropped its first match of the season as it fell to No. 25 Memphis, 1-0, Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Tigers improve 3-0 on the season while the Crimson Tide moves to 2-1-0.
"I am not displeased with the performance tonight," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "Memphis is a very good team and we were able to use this as a measuring stick. They are slightly better right now but it was a great effort by our team."
Both teams shared chances throughout the match but it was Memphis who broke through in the 65th minute. On a counterattack, Christabel Oduro slipped a shot near-post to give the Tigers the only tally of the night.
Lizzy Hildenbrandt and Melissa Smith shared quick touches at the top of the box before sliding a thru-ball to Oduro for the goal.
Memphis out-shot Alabama, 14-11, with Smith and Kelley Gravlin leading the way with three. Pia Rijsdijk, Kaitlyn Smith and Molly Atherton each fired off two shots apiece to lead the Tide.
Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier allowed the one goal and tallied six saves. Elise Kuhar-Pitters recorded the shutout and made one save.
Alabama will remain at home for a Sunday matinee match against Mountain West Conference power, New Mexico. The two teams will meet on Sunday, Aug. 28, with kickoff scheduled for Noon at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Lobos finished 12-3-5 in 2010 and made their first ever NCAA tournament appearance.
