TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama swimmer Kyle Weeks was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American Men's At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, it was announced Tuesday.
"I'm extremely proud of what Kyle has accomplished to this point in his career," UA head coach Eric McIlquham said. "This latest honor recognizes all the hard work and determination he puts into being the best he can be as a University of Alabama student-athlete."
Weeks' honor marks the sixth times in the past seven year that the Tide swimming and diving program has put at least one student-athlete on the prestigious Academic All-American At-Large team which includes student-athletes from 12 sports, including fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
"It's tough to earn a place on the at-large team with student-athletes from so many sports in the hunt for the honor," McIlquham said. "The fact that Alabama swimmers and divers have earned Academic All-American honors nine times over the last seven years and 10 times overall shows the emphasis we place on academic excellence."
Weeks, a junior from Poway, Calif., earned third-team honors and joins Jill DeVasher (1998), Vlad Polyakov (2005, 2006 and 2007), Stewart Smith (2005), Guidio Arroyo (2006), Apostolis Tsagkarakis (2007), Kevin Greer (2009) and Elizabeth Hughes (2010) and members of the UA swimming and diving program to earn a place on the CoSIDA Academic All-American at-large team.
The president of Alabama Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Weeks carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in finance. A three-year member of Alabama's SEC Championship squad, Weeks is also a member of the Computer-Based Honors Program, earning its Outstanding Student-Athlete award in 2010. A three-year SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree, Weeks was also a part of the 2011 SEC Community Service Team.
Weeks, along with senior Daniel Armstrong and first-team All-District IV recognition in late May, while senior All-American Adam Booher was named second team All-District. UA swimming and diving was the only program in the nation to have all three of its candidates earn all-district honors.
