DES MOINES, Iowa - Junior Kaylon Eppinger finished 20th in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday evening at Drake Stadium.
Eppinger came into the day in 15th but dropped five spots in the final three events to finish with 5,140 points.
"She had a tough day between the poor conditions, delays and she's been battling a knee injury this week as well," UA head coach Sandy Fowler said. "But this was her first national championship and I know she learned from this experience and she's tough enough that she'll be back with a vengeance next year."
Throughout nearly constant rain and weather delays throughout the day, Eppinger opened the second day of competition with a jump of 17-5.5 in the long jump, followed by a mark of 118-1 in the javelin. In the final event, the 800 meters, she finished in 2:31.08.
Eppinger, who finished second at the SEC Championships in the event, was the final UA women's competitor left in the field and her 20th-place performance marks the end of the 2011 collegiate season for the Crimson Tide.
