STANFORD, Calif. - The women's tennis duo of junior Courtney McLane and sophomore Alexa Guarachi fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Arizona State seniors Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein in the opening round of play at the 2011 NCAA Doubles Championships. With the loss, the Crimson Tide tandem will finish up the season with a 29-9 overall record.
"This was a disappointing loss," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "We did a great job in the first set, but in the beginning of the second set we started playing really loose and could not convert. It gave Arizona State the chance to play with a lot less pressure. We were missing a lot of first serves. Credit to them though as they took advantage of our mistakes. Courtney and Alexa have done a great job leading us in doubles all season, and they are certainly to be commended for that. The next level for us as a program is for us to come out on this stage and make something happen. I am optimistic we will get to the point of creating a presence."
The first was close during the early goings until Guarachi and McLane broke away to take the set, 6-2. In the second, the Sun Devil duo cruised out to a 5-0 lead before Alabama won its lone game of the set. In the final frame, Arizona State got off to another strong start winning the first three games. The Tide would go on to take four of the next five games to tie the set at 4-4. From there, McKenna and Hein would claim the final two games to close out the match.
