TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Trevor Lacey, a two-time winner of Alabama's Mr. Basketball award, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Alabama, head coach Anthony Grant announced Wednesday.
A 6-3, 190-pound shooting guard, Lacey is a five-star recruit according to rivals.com, that is ranked sixth at his position and 24th overall. The Huntsville, Ala., native averaged 31.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 2.6 assists last season in leading Butler High School to its third state title in four years.
"We are excited to announce the signing of Trevor Lacey to our 2011 recruiting class and welcome him to the Crimson Tide basketball family," Grant said. "Trevor has defined himself as an ultimate winner throughout his high school career by leading his teams to three state championships at Butler High School under legendary coach Jack Doss. He possesses tremendous individual skills and talents, but what is most impressive is his basketball character and IQ. He is about winning and possesses the ability to affect winning in a variety of ways."
Lacey was the 4A Player of the Year in 2011 after earning the 5A honor in 2010, was also a four-time first team all-state selection and earned Parade All-America honors.
He joins a signing class that was already ranked 12th in the nation by rivals.com and now includes four student-athletes ranked in the top-100, three in the top 50, and another regarded as one of the top junior college prospects in the nation. Three of the five members of the Alabama Sportswriters Association's 'Super Five' have committed to the Crimson Tide as Lacey joins two-time 6A Player of the Year Levi Randolph and Rodney Cooper. Also joining the Tide on the hardwood will be Nick Jacobs, a center from Atlanta, Ga., currently ranked the 12th-best center in his class and 90th overall and Moussa Gueye, a 7-0 center originally from Senegal that has played at Lake Land College in Illinois.
Lacey continues a tradition of Alabama's Mr. Basketball signing with the Tide and joins 2008 Mr. Basketball JaMychal Green on the roster. The only other two-time winner in its history, Ronald Steele, became an All-American at UA and six of the last 10 winners have continued their careers at the Capstone.
UA's five signees will join seven returning student-athletes from the 2011 SEC Western Division Championship team that won 25 games and advanced to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament.
