AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Fred Samoei won the prestigious Jerry Thompson Invitational Mile to close out a successful weekend at the Texas Relays for the University of Alabama men's track and field team. The Crimson Tide also had select team members compete at the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday as well.
Samoei beat out eight professional runners, including Olympian Leonel Manzano, in the 16-runner mile field with a time of 4:13.86. The entire field was slowed significantly by windy conditions that plagued the Relays all week. Emmanuel Bor finished 12th in the mile while his brother Julius was 16th with times of 4:17.16 and 4:19.23, respectively.
"We performed well all week in windy conditions," UA head coach Harvey Glance said. "It was a great competition that allowed us to see where the rest of the nation is at competitively and allowed us to move up the SEC performance lists as well. We had a pretty good showing and hopefully will show even more next week."
Also on Saturday, freshman Jonathan Reid finished sixth in the high jump by clearing 6-8.75. In the first three days of action in Austin, Michael Hughes finished 10th in the decathlon with a score of 7,032 that ranked as the eighth best in Alabama history and third best in the East Region this season.
Freshman Kamal Fuller came in eighth in the long jump with a mark of 25-0.75 and 19th in the 110m hurdles preliminary round with a time of 14.30. His fellow Jamaican, Dwayne Extol came in 23rd in the 400m hurdle preliminary round with a time of 53.51. Both Extol and Fuller were joined by Shaun Gaiser and Kirani James on the Tide's 4x100m relay team that finished 13th with a time of 40.95. Carison Kemei finished eighth in the 1,500m with a time of 3:53.17 on the track as well.
In Oxford, Miss., on Saturday the Tide was led by Terrell Mickens' fifth-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:55.76. Jourdan Battiste competed in two events, coming in seventh in the long jump with a leap of 22-11.75 and 52nd in the 200m at 23.19
The team will resume its outdoor season next weekend when it travels to El Paso, Texas, for the UTEP Invitational.
