TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama rowing team is headed for the 2011 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships this weekend, making its third visit to Oak Ridge, Tenn. this season in the process.
"We had a little recovery this week after racing back-to-back weekends over the last two weeks, including our trip out to California," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "We're going to face some of those same teams that we saw out in California and we're looking to go even faster and put more distance between us than we did at the San Diego Crew Classic."
The Crimson Tide is riding high after a highly successful showing at the Crew Classic, where UA's First Varsity 8+ won the Cal Cup, and a dual meet weekend against Central Florida, where the Tide posted some of its fastest times of the season.
"Against UCF, we had the fastest races of the season, and that's encouraging going into SIRAs," senior captain Laura Skaggs said. "We're looking to be very successful there."
Alabama enjoyed great success at the 2010 SIRA Championships, including a gold medal in the Varsity 4+ face. This year's championship gets underway Saturday, April 16 on Melton Lake and concludes the next day.
