STARKVILLE, Miss. - The 27th-ranked women's tennis team swept Mississippi State on Sunday, 7-0, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The Crimson Tide (13-5, 6-3 SEC) won all three doubles contests and did not give up a match in singles to the Bulldogs (2-14, 0-10 SEC) as Clay provided the match-clincher on court four. With the win, Alabama has now won six-straight Southeastern Conference matches, which is a program first.
Once again, Alabama was dominant in doubles play, dropping a combined six games across all three courts. Sophomore Antonia Foehse and freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane, ranked 60th in the nation, were first to finish with an 8-2 win on court three over senior Elizabeth Hall and junior Jordan Zachary. The Tide duo on court two of junior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Alex Clay secured the point after blanking the Bulldog pair of sophomore Danielle Terpko and freshman Vivian Pietraroia, 8-0. Alabama's 15th-ranked team of junior Courtney McLane and sophomore Alexa Guarachi completed the sweep as they won 8-4 over junior Olesya Tsigvintseva and freshman Alexandra Perper.
Alabama would earn its first singles point before playing a game as Mississippi State had to forfeit court six. No. 85 Guarachi put the Tide up 3-0 rather quickly as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two over junior Mariia Ryzhova. Clay's clinching win came in comeback fashion as she had a 3-0 deficit in the first set winning nine-straight games to down Tsigvintseva, 6-3, 6-0. At nearly the same time, No. 111 McLane wrapped up her match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Terpko on court three. The wins continued to add up for the Tide with No. 40 Macfarlane topping Perper on court one, 6-4, 6-1. Foehse wrapped things up for the day with another straight-set win in favor of Alabama as she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win against freshman Roseline Dion on court five.
Next up, Alabama will host No. 14 Tennessee on Tuesday, April 12, at 3 p.m. CT. The match was previously started but postponed due to rain. The Tide leads 1-0.
