TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 33rd-ranked men's tennis team (3-1) opened its 2011 home slate with a pair of wins on Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. The Crimson Tide topped No. 65 Troy (0-4) 5-1 in the morning match before sweeping Furman (0-5) 7-0 in the afternoon.
"I was extremely pleased with the effort and attitude in both matches today," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "Our guys played with good energy and handled the cold conditions exceptionally well. It was important to have a good performance today heading into next weekend's matches on the road."
In Alabama's morning match, the Tide and Trojans decided to play singles matches only due to the weather. Alabama won a pair of quick matches as sophomore Jarryd Botha blanked sophomore Anas Rouchdi 6-0, 6-0, while freshman Daniil Proskura topped freshman Sami Ghorbel 6-0, 6-2. Troy would get its lone win at No. 5 as senior Mario Rolemberg posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision against sophomore Ian Chadwell. Junior Ricky Doverspike gave the Tide its third point of the match as he outlasted junior Branko Weber 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Carlos Taborga would be next to finish, clinching the win for Alabama with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Jamie Eccleton. The match on court four would finish, despite the team win being decided, where junior Michael Thompson earned a 6-3, 6-4 win against freshman Niklas Jonsson.
In traditional fashion, doubles would kick off the afternoon match that saw the Tide take on Furman. Alabama would win all three contests with the point being secured on court two. The matchup at No. 1 was first to finish as Doverspike and junior Vikram Reddy downed seniors Sawyer Duncan and Andrei Chvetsov 8-3. On court two, Botha and Proskura delivered the doubles point with an 8-4 decision over freshman Alex Christ and Joel Cook 8-4, while senior Trey Walston and Thompson completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over sophomores Bobby Browning and Andrew Mellow at No. 3.
Botha gave the Tide its second point of the match as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chvetsov on court two. Following Botha, Taborga posted a near-flawless win as well downing junior Watson George 6-1, 6-1. Doverspike would clinch the match on court one as he was the third Tide player to finish with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Duncan.
The match would continue despite the team win already being clinched by Alabama. The Tide went on to capture victories in the remaining three matches.
Alabama will be back in action next weekend on the road as it takes on TCU and SMU on Feb. 11 and 12, respectively.
