MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The 36th-ranked women's tennis team collected a 4-0 win Sunday in the consolation finals of the 2011 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic with a win over No. 48 DePaul. The victory lifts the Crimson Tide to 7-2 on the season, while the loss puts the Blue Demons at 6-6 overall.
"We had a good tournament," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I am pleased with our effort throughout the weekend. I felt like we competed hard all weekend and beat a quality team in DePaul today. Our experience here will definitely be helpful as we move into next weekend."
Alabama dominated doubles once again to win its ninth doubles point in as many tries this season. The Tide's No. 2 duo of junior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Alex Clay was first to finish, posting an 8-2 win over senior Selma Salkovic and freshman Kelsey Lawson. The early point would be secured with a win on three as the nation's 43rd-ranked team in sophomore Antonia Foehse and freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane earned an 8-3 victory over junior Cali Gustafson and freshman Christiana Raymond.
In singles, Alabama collected a trio of wins in straight sets on courts five, six and two for the overall team win. Foehse struck first at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Raymond. She was followed by senior Meritt Emery, who dropped a single game in the entire match, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win against Gustafson on court six. Guarachi would clinch the match at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-0 decision against junior Gia McKnight.
"Alexa was our MVP," Mainz added. "She played great tennis all weekend. She gave us quite a bit of a boost and helped to lift the team this weekend."
Next up, Alabama opens Southeastern Conference play at home taking on a pair of SEC Eastern Division foes in No. 13 Tennessee and No. 10 Georgia. The Tide and Lady Volunteers will face off on Friday, March 4, at 3 p.m. CT, while the Tide and Bulldogs are slated to play on Sunday, March 6, at 1 p.m. CT.
