TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama sophomore outfielder Kayla Braud (Eugene, Ore.) has been named one of ESPN's Preseason Second-Team All-Americans. Braud was recently just named to the 2011 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year "Watch List."
Braud will look to build upon her tremendous freshman year campaign. Among Braud's accomplishments last season were being named SEC Freshman of the Year, being tabbed a NFCA second-team All-American, and becoming a top-10 finalist for ASA/USA Player of the Year.
Last season, Braud was just one of four Division I players to hit .500 or above for the year. On top of that, Braud led the SEC during league games in runs scored (38), and ranked second in batting average (.500), hits (42), and on base percentage (.580). Braud broke the Crimson Tide single season record for batting average with a .505 clip.
ESPN's Preseason All-American Team featured six other SEC players. Featured on the first-team selections were Georgia's Alisa Goler and Taylor Schlopy. Joining Braud on the second-team were Florida's Aja Paculba and Brittany Schutte, Georgia's Megan Wiggins and LSU's Jessica Mouse.
No. 3 Alabama will open the 2011 season against Samford on Friday, Feb. 11, in the Hibbett/Easton All-Alabama Softball Classic. The Crimson Tide will then play Alabama A&M and Jacksonville State on Saturday, followed by South Alabama and Troy on Sunday. All three games will be played in Vestavia Hills at Liberty Park.
