TUSCALOOSA, Ala - Sophomore Charles Hankerson scored 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the No. 13 ranked Alabama men's basketball team to an 82-45 victory over Alabama A&M in Coleman Coliseum Wednesday night.
The Crimson Tide opened the game on a 10-0 run and continued to build the lead from there, playing smothering defense throughout and limiting the Bulldogs to one field goal in the first half.
"I thought we had a lot of guys step up tonight," UA head coach Anthony Grant said. "We really did a good job on the backboard, did a good job defensively, and did a good job taking care of the basketball. There were a lot of things we were pleased with."
Alabama led by as many as 39 points in the second half. The Tide also had tremendous help from the bench, which contributed 47 of UA's 82 points. The Tide came away with 14 steals and scored 23 points off 18 Bulldog turnovers. Alabama committed just six turnovers in the game.
Hankerson was the leading scorer, but the Tide had four other players score in double digits. Freshman Nick Jacobs finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Freshmen Rodney Cooper, Trevor Lacey and Levi Randolph added 15, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore Carl Engstrom, in addition to his first career start, also grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out early in the second half.
Next up, Alabama hosts VCU Sunday at 8:30 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
