University of Alabama forward Tony Mitchell has been named the Southeastern Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Mitchell led the Crimson Tide to the Puerto Rico Tip Off title with wins over Maryland, Wichita State and Purdue and was named the tournament MVP for his efforts. Over those three games, the junior from Swainsboro, Ga., averaged 19 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. He shot 56.4 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point range. Against Wichita State, he led all scorers with 26 points and had a pair of double-doubles with 17 points and 11 rebounds against Maryland and 14 points and 10 boards in the title game against Purdue.
Including last Monday's contest against Oakland, he averaged 17.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 blocks per game on the week.
The honor is the second of Mitchell's career. He and the Crimson Tide, which moved up two spots to No. 13 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Alabama A&M at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
