Men's Tennis Posts Seven Wins on Friday at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team collected seven wins on the first day of play at the 2011 Crimson Tide Fall Championships. Despite rain earlier in the day, the tournament was able to get in one complete round of doubles and singles on Friday.
"It wasn't the best conditions today, and we had a late start with the rain, but overall, I thought we had positive results," said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. "Tomorrow will be a day full of activity as we get more chances to evaluate the guys when we get into the meat of the tournament."
The Tide's lone doubles team to compete on day one was junior Harris Barnard and freshman Stuart Kenyon, who earned an 8-3 decision over the Furman pair of Nate Collins and Tyler Droll.
In singles, Alabama added six wins, all of which came in straight sets. Junior Jarryd Botha defeated Samford's Carson Kadi 6-1, 6-3, while sophomore Daniil Proskura posted a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Memphis' Cedric DeZutter. Sophomore Carlos Taborga held on strong in the second set to take his match 6-1, 7-6(4) over Furman's Joel Cook, and senior Michael Thompson added a 6-3, 6-2 win over Samford's Alex Sajonz. Additionally, Barnard and Kenyon each had wins in singles with Barnard topping South Alabama's Blake Gregor, 6-4, 6-4 and Kenyon defeating Davidson's Connor Evins, 6-4, 7-5.
Also representing the Tide in singles was senior Vikram Reddy, who dropped a close 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(6) decision to Ball State's Dalton Albertin. Freshman Rens van der Vis took on Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic, falling 6-3, 6-2.
Matches will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with the second round of doubles. Two rounds of singles and the third round of doubles are slated to follow.
