BATON ROUGE, La. - The women's basketball team suffered a 72-43 loss at LSU on Sunday in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Crimson Tide now stands at 11-5 on the season and 0-3 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Lady Tigers improve to 11-6 on the season and 1-2 against league opponents.
"We are going through a shooting slump right now," Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson said. "We had good looks at the basket, but we could not convert. There are people we count on to score that are not right now, which is causing us to really struggle offensively. Part of that has to do with the fact that we are playing tougher defenses in the SEC, but we are still getting open shots that are not falling."
Alabama shot 24.6 percent for the game hitting 16 shots, while LSU connected on 44.8 percent of its attempts. Freshman Kaneisha Horn led the Alabama offense with 13 points. She also grabbed eight of the Tide's rebounds.
Alabama missed its first 11 shots of the game before Horn hit a jumper at 13:23 setting the score at 8-2. The Tide would go on to score 11 additional points in the half but went in the locker room trailing LSU 25-13. Alabama shot 16.7 percent over the first 20 minutes connecting on five of its 30 attempts.
The Tide opened the second half on an 8-2 run with just over two minutes played to cut the Lady Tiger lead to six, but LSU responded scoring the next 14 straight points for a 41-21 advantage. The Lady Tigers continued to lead by double figures throughout the game pulling ahead by as many as 32.
Alabama returns to Tuscaloosa for three straight home games beginning Thursday, Jan. 13, when it hosts Vanderbilt. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT in Coleman Coliseum.
