Men's Tennis Sweeps Hawai'i, 4-0

AUSTIN, Texas - The 34th-ranked men's tennis team (1-1) swept No. 37 Hawai'i (0-3), 4-0, on Sunday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Crimson Tide captured the doubles point and won a trio of singles matches in straight sets to cruise to the team victory.
"I thought we rebounded well today and registered a solid win against a quality team," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "As we talked about after the Rice match, we simply need to view each match early in the season as a building block to get better each time out. I think we did that today, and we'll get back to work this week to prepare for next weekend's matches."
Alabama got ahead early in the match after securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. First to finish was the matchup at No. 3 where junior Michael Thompson and sophomore Jarryd Botha cruised to an 8-2 victory over freshmen Jonathan Brooklyn and David Schuster. Hawai'i would even up the count with a win on court one as seniors Daniel Llarenas and Jeremy Tweedt topped juniors Ricky Doverspike and Vikram Reddy 8-4. Moments later, sophomore Ian Chadwell and freshman Daniil Proskura clinched the doubles point for the Tide earning an 8-4 win at No. 2 against junior Leo Rosenberg and freshman Danilo Casanova.
In singles, Doverspike collected his second win of the weekend at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Rosenberg. Thompson was next to finish as he posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Llarenas on court five putting Alabama one point away from the team win. The Tide led in second sets on courts two, three and four, but it would be Proskura finishing first earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Casanova at No. 4.
Alabama will play its first home matches of the season next weekend when it hosts a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Tide will take on No. 62 Troy at 10 a.m. CT and Furman at 3 p.m. CT.
