TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's track and field team will continue its 2011 indoor season at Saturday's adidas Classic in Lincoln, Neb.
The scored meet begins at 1:30 p.m. CST at the University of Nebraska's Devaney Center, one of the nation's premier indoor track facilities. In addition to the host, No. 17 Nebraska, the field includes visiting teams from Houston, Wichita State, Air Force and Missouri.
"It will be refreshing to go against schools outside of the SEC and the Southeast," UA head coach Sandy Fowler said. "It allows the team to realize that there are other teams out there and we're going to start seeing these teams on the national level. It's all about getting your mind set to move forward and improve."
The squad is coming off a solid start to the season in last weekend's Kentucky Invitational where the Tide had five top-10 finishes and six personal bests. Freshman Chloe Heatherton started her collegiate career with a second-place finish in the triple jump and the fourth-best jump in school history at 41-9.75. Classmate Kaylon Eppinger finished seventh in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.50 in her collegiate debut as well.
In the throws, Amethyst Holmes finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 59-6.75 while teammate Wilamena Hopkins was also third in the shot put with a mark of 50-0.50. Improving on those finishes is the priority for the Tide at the adidas Classic.
"The team is going to need to step up its game this weekend," Fowler said. "We've got to move up on the SEC lists and improve our personal bests. Getting our confidence level stronger is key."
Following this weekend's competition the women's squad will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 4-5.
