TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 60th-ranked women's tennis team continued to dominate its opponents at the Florida State Quad on Sunday as the Crimson Tide did not give up a single match in its nine appearances. Alabama faced Central Florida in doubles before taking on No. 14 Florida State in singles.
"We played very convincing tennis today," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "We came out ready to play, and had great starts today. We got in matches early which really helped us to set the tone. We had some impressive wins, and I am really encouraged by what this team is showing right now."
The Tide kicked off the day with doubles where Alabama earned four victories. The sixth-ranked duo of junior Courtney McLane and sophomore Alexa Guarachi topped Central Florida senior Jenny Frisell and junior Alexis Rodriguez 8-2, while junior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Alex Clay took down sophomore Genevieve Lorbergs and freshman Courtney Griffith 8-4. The Tide's 32nd-ranked team of sophomore Antonia Foehse and freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane earned an 8-1 win over junior Andrea Yacaman and sophomore Jenna Doerfler 8-1, and senior Meritt Emery and redshirt junior Tiffany Welcher collected an 8-6 win over sophomore Allison Hodges and freshman Josephine Haraldson.
In singles, No. 15 Macfarlane topped Florida State sophomore Francesca Segarelli 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(9), while No. 63 Guarachi knocked off Seminole senior Katie Rybakova, ranked No. 42, 6-3, 6-2. No. 72 McLane picked up a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 victory against freshman Ruth Seaborne, and Clay defeated senior Federica Suess 6-4, 6-3. Emery dropped just three games in her match defeating freshman Manon Veldman 6-2, 6-1.
"This is a real promising start to our season," Mainz added. "I like what I am seeing, and the biggest thing is we are really improving in a lot of areas."
