TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men's track and field team opens up the 2011 indoor season on Friday evening at the Kentucky Track and Field Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
Competition at UK's Nutter Field House begins at 5 p.m. CST Friday with the weight throw, pole vault, high jump and triple jump. Field events continue Saturday morning starting at 9:30 a.m. CST followed by the team hitting the 290-meter track starting at 11:30 a.m. CST.
The Crimson Tide will face a 12-team field on the men's side that features two other SEC programs in Kentucky and Tennessee and representatives of the ACC (Georgia Tech), Big Ten (Michigan State) and BIG EAST (Louisville).
"We always use this meet as a gauge to see where we're at and what we need to work on," UA head men's coach Harvey Glance said. "What we'll take from this meet is what we need to improve on the rest of the season. This is basically a tune-up meet to see how we stand."
Glance's men's squad is ranked 27th in the preseason USTFCCA computer rankings and returns five student-athletes that posted top-50 performances nationally last season. Those performances include Kirani James in the 200 and 400m, Fred Samoei in the 800m, Emmanuel Bor in the 3,000m, Moses Kiptoo in the 5,000m and Tyler Campbell in the high jump.
Following this weekend's competition the men's team will have two full weeks of training before competing in the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 4-5 in South Bend, Ind.
