"It is a win but it feels like a loss," Alabama head coach Todd Bramble said. "We just played uninspired soccer today. We will now have to see how bad they want it. It has to get better from us."
Just over seven minutes into overtime, sophomore Ashley Willis made a long run down the left side of the field and was brought down in the penalty area to award the penalty kick.
For the second time this season Petriello buried her attempt, this time handing Alabama the win. The goal was her third on the season.
Alabama once again was on the offensive all match long as the Tide rallied off 33 shots while holding UTC to nine attempts. Petriello led the way with a game-high eight shots. Fellow senior Victoria Frederick followed with seven shots, putting four on frame.
Alabama freshman goalkeeper Shanna Brooks earned a victory in her first official career start. The newcomer allowed one goal and made four saves.
With Alabama holding possession for most of the first half the Tide broke the silence in the 39th minute. Petriello connected on her second goal of the season when she buried a 25-yard shot near post to hand Alabama the 1-0 lead.
That advantage would head into the locker room at the intermission as Alabama out-shot UTC 13-2 in the period.
Chattanooga was able to tie the game up in the 58th minute when forward Donna-Kay Henry got behind the Tide defense and found Kerbi Towry far post on a one-touch finish.
Alabama will return to a full week slate as it will first hit the road to face Memphis on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. The Tide will then return home to face Middle Tennessee State on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
